What’s in a name?

Fishing boats have names for simple reasons. Names are chosen for not so simple reasons. A registered fishing boat must have a name to use on the documentation of the vessel. It helps to identify the boat and crew and also helps when someone is trying to reach an individual fisherman using the vhf radio.

Commercial fishermen unlike recreational fishermen usually downplay any success they have on the water and this can be reflected in the names “No Cents”, “Empty Pockets”, and “Money Pit”.  The name of the boat above has since been changed to “Morgan and Allison” after the captain’s daughters.  Family members are the most widely used names among commercial fishermen. The thought behind this is that a captain will cherish and take care of their boat the way they would their own spouse, parent, sibling, or child.
